History

Santa Maria de Mercede church had a relatively short lifespan, lasting from 1913 to 1933. The small church building was constructed in 1914 on land donated by the Sterling Salt Company because many of the company's Italian workers were Catholic and wanted a local place to pray. The church closed in 1933 and burned to the ground sometime in the late 1930s.
